We went down to Esplanade for New Year's Eve 2006, to catch abit of the celebratory mood in the air.. but mainly for the Vertical Rush gigs at the outdoor theatre. A thanks to Boon for the heads-up. Its been awhile since I went for a gig, guess I've had a bit too much clubbing and drinking recently. The band played 2 sets, one at 9:30pm, and the other just after midnight, aka they're the last few bands of 2005 and first for 2006, haha. To be honest, I have to say the 9:30pm set was a downer, and you can't blame the band for it either. The entire audience was about as responsive and enthusiastic as a collective block of deadwood. Come on people, cheer, clap, or something. You want to just sit and watch, you stay at home and watch your Channel 8 serial dramas. The 2nd set was just beautiful. Right after the awe-inspiring fireworks, the guys jumped onto the stage and started. I think a live performance is an chemical reaction between the performers and the audience. You really can't help but give that 110% worth of entertainment if the crowd adores you. We were delighted with an electrifying 30-40 minutes of energetic jamming.
That one part made my day man.. The music, the life, the meaning and sentimentality, for seven minutes I was lost in the lyrics. Here are some of the other shots of the band taken that night. From left to right: Nick, Esmond, Shaun & Marcus. (I couldn't get a good shot of drummer Daren from where I was, sorry) What we did after the gig? Nothing man. Damn shag ah, we old people already, not so much energy. Took a Nightrider home. current readings Convent Girls, by various contributors & edited by Jackie Bennett and Rosemary Forgan. With a recent trip to the library failing to yield a copy of Freakonomics again, I found this little gem of a book. Convent Girls features the accounts and experiences of old convent girls, all who have grown up to become successful writers, editors, and influential people in other fields. What started as a random pick for a read turned out to be a rather insightful look into how a convent education has affected these women, for better or worst. What is surprising too is how from the anecdotes of these strangers I've come to understand a tiny bit little more of why/how some of my friends and close ones who had a convent education turn out to be the way they are, as the foreword of the book put it "extraordinarily strong-minded women." Its a good thing I guess, seeing as how I'll probably not be going through a convent life anytime soon. |
