I went with Edison & Ruixiang to a cosplay convention on Sunday. Not because I am particularly into the cosplay or the anime scene, just a casual level of interest. In fact, the convention was more of a sideshow for the day's list of events, was more looking forward to the bouldering session with Boon & Edd after that.
So yah. Thomas @ the cosplay convention. Not in costume, no preparations, cept' for a suitably anime-themed Mazinger-Z t-shirt. (is that counted?) In fact, if not for this shot, there would be totally no trace that we guys were even present at the event: While I was there, I was amazed by the sheer amount of people dressed up in cosplay gear all around. People in anime-themed costumes, game-themed costumes, with outlandish hairstyles, funny hair colours, guys with makeup, girls crossdressing as guys, guys crossdressing as girls (!), people with guns, swords, miscellaneous weaponry, cute mascot doll accessories... all around! On stage, performing, off stage, walking about, talking with friends, behind booths, etc. It felt odd for that day to be wearing normal casual clothes like the safe shirt + trousers + sandals combo and be the one who was feeling out of place instead. So much for faux pas'es. Obviously, seeing ordinary teenage people like myself dressing up weird was not a common experience. These people being Singaporeans made it even weirder. So there I was, my first thoughts were that - wow.. these people sure are creative and brave to design these outfits and to appear in them in public. Tom: Wah.. What's that girl doing to the other girl, sitting on her on stage with her hands around her neck? Some sort of lesbo autoerotic asphyxiation shit?In any case, girl-on-girl scenes rule. Where was I- Oh yah. But on second thought, actually, these people are not really being creative what. Sure, they might make or tailor their own costumes in some cases, but they are consciously doing their best to be as close as possible to a concept that has been defined by a character in a game or anime series. That's not real creativity what. That's doing your best to fulfil an expectation. ['Darth Vader' appears on stage with a 'Boba Fett']The second point about these people being fearless. Yah sure, they are taking a big risk by looking Oh yea, saw bloody zixuan & Ra|nYdAy (aka 'sushi girl', because zixuan & I manage to bluff her for 2 whole hours that 'Perplexed' was a sort of sushi) @ the convention. Cool. Ra|nYdAy gave me a Gundam Seed jigsaw puzzle that had a difficulty level mean for retards. (6 x 9 = 54 pieces = not exactly MENSA caliber challenge) Thanks anyways. Gundam's cool. |
