Went down to the SPCA with Dawn yesterday. She was there doing her job as a volunteer, (which is a marvelous thing) I was there just for some fuzzy feline destress therapy. The second I stepped into the place my personal stand to never buy a pet from a pet store gets reaffirmed instanteously. Not with all these God's creatures abandoned and waiting everlong for a new home. If you believe in reincarnation then I say one of the less pleasant scenarios you may find yourself in is to be one of the dogs in the kennels. Its a no win case however you look at it. You leap and flip about barking incessantly in your cage like you're rabid hoping to catch the eye of that prospective owner that just walked in. He stops for a moment in front of you and you cease, your stillest best-behaviour posture on display with the threat of the jab and forever slumber looming ever closer. "That's why I say cats are so much better lah." He says to his female peer and walks off.Well, even if he took you out and gave you a home you'll end up having your sexual organs removed, to paraphrase Chuck Palahniuk. Some of the dogs are obviously pedigree types, and most of them are the big kind that can only be kept in large landed homes of well-to-do people. I don't know if this sounded hate-filled but I keep thinking about how these filthy rich This one's another sad example. There was a debate that went on in newspaper forums a while back on how it is both impractical and wrong to bring in arctic dog breeds, like the above Alaskan Husky, due to the predominately hot climate here and their thick unsuitable fur. Some people even called for a ban to be imposed by the government. My question is why hasn't this been put in place, 'cause you really have to be there yourself to see how this particular dog just laid about listlessly and constantly stuck out its tongue to keep cool, and it was not even a sunny day - a constant light drizzle of rain lasted most part of the morning. Try imagining yourself covered in winter clothing and walking down Orchard in the afternoon. Putting aside frustrations I went over to the 'cat-tery', a double-gated enclosed area housing a commute of a dozen plus cats. When I first went in all of their heads looked in one direction outside. I presumed at first that this must be some unspoken common expression of unity in their dreams of freedom. Turned out that its actually attention directed at this one pigeon that flew in and perched itself just outside the fencing, its almost as if it is knowingly taunting all these starving carnivores. It made me wonder if the Tweeter-Sylvester rivalry went beyond just cartoon shows. Most part of my stay at SPCA was spent just sitting in there idling and just enjoying the relatively tranquil setting. One particular feline decided to make the best out of the human visitor and settled in on my lap. Soon another one thought there was still enough room for one more and made itself comfy, in addition to using its buddy as a pillow-bolster. You can't tell from the pictures but I was actually happy. After stroking these two for almost half an hour they were totally gone. I held and pressed their paw paddings and they couldn't care less. You cannot be unaffected when you see them being as relaxed and contented as they were, you in turn feeling a warm sense of well-being and calm. In addition, a cat's purr is said to have regenerative healing properties, so add a tangible benefit to the list. And when I left I yawned and stretched big time, like I had a good night's worth of rest :) |
