I seldom comment on global news pieces cos' I always feel my lack of local involvement in the said event would render my thoughts as cheap talk. But reading this really pissed me off. In addition to their goals being completely un-altruistic, the manner which they chose to protest against this apparent "discrimination" is very dangerously irresponsible. Two points to note: * Male-male intercourse is high AIDS transmission risk behaviourSo, yeah. Please give blood for the right reasons. I really shouldn't have to say this. Since I'm on the topic let's look at the local situation. here's the current status of the blood stock available from the Red Cross's Donorweb. Took a screenshot: Blood Stock as of 14-01-2006, 2:21pm. Photo taken from Donorweb. I don't know about you, but the charts above worry me. I can hardly bear to imagine all the family members and loved ones who might have important medical operations precariously delayed due to a shortage of supply.Blood. Giving this precious life material is about as powerful as a secular prayer can be - 15 minutes reclined on that foldable lounge chair with my right hand outstretched, a montage of all your faces go through my mind one by one. At the recent blood donation drive I spotted this banner hung high on the stage of the community centre multi-purpose hall where the event was held. IT WILL NOT HURT BUT IT COULD HELP TO SAVE A LIFE :) I won't lie. There definitely will be oww, but in my opinion going through with it, even in the face of pain, makes the effort all the more precious and noteworthy. I'm not going to go on with some tear-jerker end of a plea. I've already laid out the statistics and some of my own reasons. You decide. |
