In the dim-witted inexperienced foolishness of her youth she greedily swallowed the elixir of life. She had chanced upon the formula while sifting through the papers of the senior professor that she served as an assistant to. The preparation process was surprisingly easy, and she stared hard at the glowing liquid sitting potent in the test tube before she decided. Never wrinkle, fade, decay. Forever young. Gulp. And she lived on. And on. And on and friends and family aged and died as she looked on unchanged. Nothing had purpose anymore. There was no future because she was immortal, existence was not a linear process but now a constant, mundane, ever present. Because time was never running out, nothing had urgency anymore. All pursuits could be left till another day because there's always tomorrow. Every single day awake became for her a meaningless eternal living death. All the colour music beauty and splendour the world could offer dimmed into simple plain dullness. Then miraculously she did it. The antidote, she was sure of it. In her hands. She could scarcely wait for the brew to simmer before swallowing it whole. Instantly she felt her body weaken very faintly, but surely, a reassuring sign of mortality regained. Now she has a limit, and will die, and the body will rot away to nothingness eventually. She held the empty tube in her fingers. For the first time in centuries she was able to smile. --- I paraphrased this from some book I picked up to browse at Borders today. Hope I don't get sued. |
