A chat with a friend on the net came upon her expressed interest in reading The Catcher in The Rye again. I raised my eyebrows, then my eyeballs, 1 or 2 degrees up to my personal copy of the book, seated snugged between other novels on a shelf right above my monitor. Another line typed, I reached up for the paperback. Flipping thru' its yellow pages, I catch up with the exploits of Holden Caulfield. The reader's version of a sproadic visit by a distant relative, I pop up earlier on in the character's life, disappearing for a extended time period worth many pages and chapters then dropping in again unannounced, but with so a bystander observer's coolness and such a abrupt briefness. I was about to put the book back when I spotted the unnerving signs of weathering and spotted stains on the insides of the cover. Disdain yet concerned I examined the damage.. When I spotted the pen written note on the 1st page. It wasn't that long, less words than perhaps 2 haikus, but the simple note held me enthralled. Memories flooded back from a time of teenage love amidst the daily school life, almsot 2 years in the army have made that seem almost eons ago. Reading this same note maybe a couple of months back would have left me feeling raw, but I now feel a slight warmth and a gentle mirth, a geniune appreciation for at least the memories of a wonderful past. And a light amusement - I make a mental note that its only apart from the adult protocol of courtship and romance (or if the relationship's rock solid), that a written obscenity can be used as a term of endearment. I smile, returning the novel back to where it belonged alongside other little tomes and relics. |
